1. Out of Bounds
All boundary fences and areas defined by out of bounds pegs.
2. Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions)
Includes:
- Artificially surfaced paths
- Course gardens
- Embedded gravel/stones
- Ropes
- Artificial hole covers (if the ball is on the putting surface)
- Protection fences
- Course sprinkler heads
Rule 16.1b applies
i. Sprinkler Heads Near Putting Greens
Relief applies if a sprinkler head:
- Is on the player’s line of play
- Is within two club lengths of the putting green
- Is within two club lengths of the ball
Exception: No relief if the line of play is clearly unreasonable.
ii. Protective Fence at 9th Tee Box
If a player’s stance or swing is impeded by the protective fence:
- Relief allowed to designated drop zones:
- Hole 8 – Back of the 8th green
- Hole 16 – Left side of the protective fence
- Between 14th green and 11th tee – One drop zone available
- All other holes – Proceed to the nearest drop zone
Note: The ball must be dropped and come to rest within the drop zone. Drop zones are relief areas under Rule 14.3.
3. Exposed Tree Roots in the Fairway
If a ball is in the general area and exposed tree roots interfere with play (cut to fairway height or less, or in rough within two club lengths of the fairway):
- Roots are treated as Ground Under Repair
- Relief allowed under Rule 16.1b
- No relief if interference is only to the stance

4. Penalty Areas
i. Left of 6th Green
If the ball is in, or virtually certain to be in, the penalty area:
- Take relief under Rule 17.1, or
- Drop the ball in the designated drop zone
ii. Behind and to the Side of 16th Green
If the ball is in, or virtually certain to be in, the penalty area:
- Take relief under Rule 17.1, or
- Drop the ball in the designated drop zone
Note: Local Rule 4-ii only applies when playing the 16th hole.
For all drop zones:
- The ball must be dropped and come to rest within the drop zone
- Drop zones are relief areas under Rule 14.3
5. Abnormal Course Condition – No Play Zones
Free relief under Rule 16.1f
i. Staked Trees and Shrubs
- Treated as No Play Zones
- Includes the stake and any wrapping
ii. 6th Hole – Behind the Green
- Path extending behind the practice green is a No Play Zone
- Drop zone located behind the 6th green and in front of the path
iii. Shed on 17th Fairway (Left Side)
- Defined area around and including the shed is a No Play Zone
- If ball enters the shed area, proceed to the nearest drop zone
Drop Zones:
- The ball must be dropped and come to rest in the drop zone
- Drop zones are relief areas under Rule 14.3
6. Damage Caused by Birds
- Treated as Ground Under Repair in the general area
- Relief allowed under Rule 16.1b
- No relief if only stance is affected
Penalty for breach: General Penalty under Rule 14.7a
7. Practice Fairway – No Play Zone
- Marked with white stakes
- Relief must be taken under Rule 16.1f if the ball is in the No Play Zone
- Area beyond the No Play Zone (right of the practice fairway) is Out of Bounds
Indicator Markings
- Out of Bounds: White stakes with black tops
- Red Penalty Area: Red stakes/lines
- Yellow Penalty Area: Yellow stakes/lines
- Ground Under Repair: White stakes/lines with GUR signs
- Drop Zones: White lined boxes with “DZ” markings and/or Drop Zone signs
